Birthstone of May – Elegant Emerald – May 18, 2017
Fill your jewellery box with Spring hues...
We are well and truly into Spring and its the birthstone month of one of the most rare gemstones in the world…Emerald.
This exquisite stone is said to symbolise love and rebirth and is also considered to aid in fertility. Egypt’s tempestuous female monarch, Cleopatra, was as famous for wearing Emeralds during her ruling as Liz Taylor is for wearing diamonds in our time. It was customary for ancient Egyptian mummies to be buried with an Emerald carved with the symbol of verdure – flourishing greenness – on their necks as a symbol of eternal youth.
When choosing your Emerald, the deeper and more vivid the colour, the greater its value. An emerald that holds most value exudes an intense bluish hue in addition to the beautiful, bold green. Almost all Emeralds are found with birthmarks known as inclusions. Some inclusions are expected and do not detract from the value as much as it would with other stones.
