On your research you may have stumbled across a term known as the 4C’s – cut, clarity, colour and carat.  These are the key guidelines you must follow in order to choose the perfect perfect diamond ring for your loved one.

Diamond cut is one of the most personal areas of the 4C’s to the customer.  To define what the cut is, it is the shape in which the diamond has been cut from a rough stone into a faceted gem.  There are various cuts available all of which can reflect the characteristics of your partner.  Here below is a brief description of each to help you choose the perfect shape.

Brilliant Round

If you are ever in doubt about what diamond shape to choose then this is the cut to go for.  One of the most popular shapes out there, brilliant round oozes sparkle and elegance.  This cut is designed to give off more fire and brilliance than any other diamond.

Princess

The Princess cut is known for being the square version of Round Brilliant.  Created in 1980, it is the most popular fancy shape as it can work perfect with any style of ring.

Emerald

The beauty of the Emerald cut diamond is that it reflects light, like a hall of mirrors effect, rather than the sparkle that some of the other diamonds produce.  To show this diamond cut off at its best, splashes of colour on the shoulders or inclusions in the design will add to the unusual beauty of the diamond.

Oval

This modified brilliant round cut is shaped to create the illusion of greater diamond size.  The Oval cut diamond can have a larger number of facets meaning it produces the same amount of light, if not more than the brilliant round.  It certainly would be a great choice if your partner loves her large diamonds.

Marquise

Originating from the 1700’s where King Louis XV requested that a diamond was created to match the smile of his mistress Marquise de Pompadour, this is a modified brilliant round that elongated your fingers and sits in an elegant position.  This regal style generates an illusion of greater size due to the dual apex which creates a dramatic look.

Pear

The distinctive signature of this diamond is the trimmed corners, giving it a softer shape than the princess cut.  This particular shape looks exquisite set with either baguette or round side diamonds.  Some radiant cuts can vary in their degree of rectangularity depending on the carat size.

Heart

This unusual cut of diamond is the ultimate symbol of love and is a distinctive choice for a variety of diamond jewellery.  Similar to the Asscher cut, you must choose a high clarity and colour grade to show this shape to its best.

Cushion

If you are looking for a unique and individual look, the cushion cut diamond has been a popular choice for more than a century.  Known for its rounded corners and larger facets to increase their brilliance, this cut is available in shapes ranging from square to rectangular.
